The 11th Halal Showcase, composed of the Exhibition and Conference, was organised from April 9 to 12, 2014 at the KL Convention Centre.  I visited the Exhibition on April 10 and spent around the halls for around three hours. The Exhibition was handled by MATRADE and the Conference by the Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC). HDC was established in 2006 following the proposal outlined in the Third Industrial Master Plan (IMP 3)  as a coordinating national initiative and creating business opportunities on halal products (according to its official website).  It focuses on the core cluster of the halal industry which include processed food, ingredients, livestock, pharmaceuticals, health and cosmetic products covering the value chain of production, processing, packaging, transportation, finance, advertising and promotion, finally R&D.

With this wide ranging inclusivity the key agencies that are linked to HDC are many - ministries
(Min of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives & Consumerism; MITI; Min of Transport; Min of Agriculture; Min of Finance; MOSTI), government departments (Dept of Islamic Dev Malaysia; MARTRADE; MIDA; MPC; Dept of Vet Services; Royal Malaysia Custom; Dept of Statistics; SIRIM; Dept of Standards; EPU; SME Corporation; Dept of Chemistry), research institutions
(MARDI; MPOB) and universities (UPM; IIUM;UiTM;UKM; USM).

The range of halal products exhibited were quite varied and include beverages, confectionery, frozen food, herbal and healthcare products, pharmaceuticals, meat, dairy, preserved fruits and vegetables, processed products, raw food materials, seasoning and spices, restaurants, snack food, vegetable oils, cosmetics, toiletries, detergents, food packaging machinery and product packaging.

The countries that participated are Bangladesh, Belgium, Brunei, China, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Italy, Netherlands, Palestine, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, UAE and the host country Malaysia.
